When writing fanfic I can turn out 2 - 3k in a free afternoon/evening no trouble.

When writing my novel, I can spend all day on it, as I did today, and only come out with 1.5k.

Conclusion: original fiction is a lot harder than I thought it would be, despite all my previous (fanfic) writing experience.
